Each year, the California Association for Postsecondary Education and Disability (CAPED) honors individuals and groups who have made exceptional contributions to advancing access, equity, and success for students with disabilities in higher education. These awards recognize achievements in advocacy, teaching, administration, student leadership, and community partnership. While some awards are presented annually, others are reserved for years when nominees meet the highest standards of distinction. Together, they celebrate the passion, dedication, and innovation that drive progress in disability access and inclusion.
Lanterman Award
CAPED’s highest honor, the Lanterman Award recognizes an individual whose lifetime advocacy or legislative work has profoundly improved the lives of people with disabilities. Named after Assembly Member Frank Lanterman, a champion of landmark disability legislation, the award honors those whose impact reaches state or national levels.
Awarded only when a nominee meets the exceptional standard of this award, making it rare and prestigious.
Darrell Steinberg Award
This award honors state legislators who have shown sustained and groundbreaking support for students with disabilities in higher education. Named for Senator Darrell Steinberg, author of pivotal laws such as AB 422 and Proposition 63, it recognizes leaders who have advanced accessibility, mental health, and disability rights.
Awarded only in years with a qualifying nominee, it reflects an extraordinary legislative legacy.
CAPED Professional Recognition Award
This award celebrates a CAPED member’s outstanding contributions to education for students with disabilities, whether at the regional or state level. It recognizes innovation, dedication, and leadership in the field.
Typically awarded annually, it is granted only to nominees who meet its high standard.
CAPED Community Recognition Award
This award honors individuals or groups outside CAPED’s membership who have significantly benefitted the Association or its mission. Contributions may be direct or indirect, and recognition can be at the local, regional, or state level.

CAPED Student of the Year Award
This award celebrates a student who has made a substantial impact on campus life for students with disabilities, either through advocacy or active involvement. Honorees may have influenced local, regional, or state-level change.
Awarded annually to those who inspire positive change for their peers.
CAPED Teacher of the Year Award
Recognizing an educator outside disability services, this award honors teachers who go above and beyond to support learners with disabilities. Through innovative teaching and effective accommodations, honorees exemplify inclusive excellence.

CAPED Administrator of the Year Award
This award recognizes administrators who demonstrate a deep commitment to ensuring the success of students with disabilities. Honorees actively support disability services as integral to their institution’s mission.
